Being sick stinks. Being sick while you're pregnant or nursing and avoiding over the counter medications is even worse.

While it's not a cure all, this Congestion Elixir combines the natural healing power of whole food ingredients to offer a safe and chemical free solution to managing a cold. Served as a hot tea, these ingredients will aid in opening up your respiratory passages, soothe your throat and help break down mucus.

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups boiling water
1 1/2 inch round of fresh pineapple (core removed)
1 - 2 inch sprig fresh rosemary
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon honey
2 1/8 inch rounds peeled fresh ginger
1/16 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or more if you can handle the heat)

***If you're not pregnant, a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar can be added to the elixir to help further alleviate congestion.

Directions:
Heat water in a pot until it reaches a boil. Remove the pot from heat. Place remaining ingredients in the pot, adding pineapple last. Cover pot and allow ingredients to steep for five minute. Pour steeped liquid through a sieve into a separate container. Pick out the pineapple pieces and add to a blender with steeped liquid. Blend until smooth.

Add left over rosemary sprig for garnish. Drink while hot.

Tip: Freeze for later

Congestion Elixir

Combine 2x the water with 3x the remaining ingredients (excluding the honey), and follow the instructions above. Pour blended liquid into a standard size muffin tin (each will hold approximately 1/2 cup) and freeze. Pop out the frozen Elixir rounds, place them in a plastic bag or glass jar and return them to freezer. To make the tea, simply add one frozen Elixir round to a cup of boiling water and add one tablespoon honey.
